Unani medicine is very similar to Ayurveda. Unani medicine includes similar theories and principles regarding the role of key elements including air, earth, water, and fire. Practitioners believe an imbalance in these elements results in disease. Treatments, which often include various herbal combinations, are aimed at rebalancing these elements. Diagnosis in Unani medicine, similar to Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, often relies on a pulse diagnosis. Unani medicine also uses stool and urine analysis as diagnostic tools.

Unani medicine is an ancient system of medicine that uses a wide variety of methods for diagnosing and treating many different medical conditions. “Unani” literally means “Greek.” It is practiced throughout Asia and especially in India. Unani medicine is often credited to Hakim Ibn Sina (Avicenna) who enriched the system by recording observations and information about the practice around 980 AD. However, the system includes concepts and practices from many others including Hippocrates, Galen, and Rhazes.Unani medicine is not a recognized or licensed health profession in North America.
